The Courlanders
in Gambia and on Tobago
Elector Jacob of Courland became the forerunner of
German colonial aspirations, when in 1651 he took
possession of Gambia and followed this up by declaring
Tobago a colony of Courland in 1654. It is the story
of a small country which tried to keep up with its
more powerful neighbours in order to participate in
colonisation and the slave trade.
